On December 4-5, The Climate Reality Project presented the global broadcast event 24 Hours of Reality: Be the Voice of Reality. Hosted by former US Vice President Al Gore and featuring an all-star lineup of celebrated thought leaders, political icons, artists, scientists, and more, Be the Voice of Reality traveled the globe for 24 straight hours with thought-provoking conversations, rousing musical performances, and inspiring stories.
Since the first 24 Hours of Reality event in 2011, Indonesian Climate Reality Leaders have been active either in speaking at the webcast program, seeking notable speakers or organizing watch parties as public events.
How to Get Involved
This year Climate Reality offered several ways for people to be involved in the global event:
1. Help make 24 Hours of Reality the world’s largest social broadcast on the climate crisis. When 24 Hours of Reality goes live, people can automatically share the broadcast to their pages or proles.
2. Encourage friends, supporters, and networks to tune in and add their voices. The first (and easiest) step is to invite others to tune in to 24 Hours of Reality. Create posts with the #24HoursofReality hashtag, or use one of the sample social media messages provided.
3. Become a Citizen Producer by donating $50 and get one’s name as Citizen Producers in the live broadcast credits.
Viewers witnessed the climate crisis unfolding on every continent and highlight the climate activists who are leading humanity toward a brighter future. The 24-Hour program featured the modern tales of how citizens, scientists, entrepreneurs, and local leaders are creating practical solutions that work.
Network Marketing
The Climate Reality Project Indonesia usually has one main watch party and some Climate Reality Leaders who are not able to join usually watch the broadcast individually.
This year we tried a different strategy, inspired by network marketing.
We contacted active Climate Reality Leaders, the alumni of our flagship program the Youth Leadership Camp for Climate Change , and people we have worked with in climate change circles. We invited them to not only organize watch parties for Indonesia Segment allocated on Hour 9, but also to persuade their networks to do so. We emphasized on casual watch parties meaning however small the audience is it will be very much appreciated.
The Indonesia segment, 2.00 – 3.00 PM western Indonesia time explored how leaders in Indonesia are increasingly turning to clean energy as a path to leapfrog fossil fuels and modernize communities with islands like Sumba leading the way.
Indonesia Segment
In a video clip on Sumba Lights the Way, Sandra Winarsa a Climate Reality Leader explained about Sumba Iconic Island initiative to create a new model for islands on the path to development working to reach 100 percent renewable status by 2025
A Climate Reality Leader, Suzy Hutomo, the chairperson and co-owner of The Body Shop Indonesia was featured in one of her company’s sustainability initiative that supports green enterprises in her community. She also discussed why the palm oil industry should focus on sustainability and how it can be achieved.
There were also live interviews with Forest Watch Indonesia Chairman Dr. Togu Manurung and Dr. Hayu Prabowo, a Climate Reality Leader who is Head of Environment and Natural Resources at Indonesian Ulema Council.
Jeff Orlowski, the man behind the camera in socially relevant works like Chasing Ice and Chasing Coral talked about what it means to capture and tell the story of our changing climate from award winning film maker.
Watch Parties
A few days before the Indonesia segment started we regularly updated Climate Reality Indonesia networks on who had commited to organize watch parties, and which big islands are missing. The results were amazing !!! Although we missed the Island of Papua, we had 25 watch parties in 3 time zones all over Indonesia that we were able to monitor, even in remote areas. Some of the organizers sent photos of the watch parties, some forgot, but informed us that they enjoyed the program and looking forward to more collaborations.
The fact that the video clips were in Bahasa Indonesia is no doubt one of the Watch Parties’ success factor, making 24 Hours of Reality a global event that touches those in the countries featured.
It was also nice being featured as one of the Citizen Producers of the 24 Hours of Reality.
