Former Vice President of the United States Al Gore, speaks at the Indonesia Pavilion, at UNFCCC Conference of Parties (COP 23), in Bonn, Germany (10/11). The COP is a global conference on climate change, and this year is held in the City of Bonn, Germany 6 -17 November 2017.
On the occasion, Al Gore expressed his appreciation to The Climate Reality Project Indonesia, which has organized Youth for Climate Camp for Indonesian youth that currently has more than 2000 alumni. Al Gore also encourages international support for this program in the future.
Al Gore, now known as a climate change activist, has been working to communicate climate change, through various means and forums. One of the ways was through the movie An Inconvenient Truth produced in 2006, and An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power, which was launched this year.
In the first film, Al Gore tries to raise the world's awareness of climate change and the need for action. While at An Inconvenient Sequel; Truth to Power, Al Gore brings new hope that technological advances can be a solution to addressing the challenges of climate change. This second film, is now being intensively screened in various countries, including Indonesia.
Climate change is a major challenge facing societies, and Al Gore chose film as one of the communication media, because communicating the causes and impacts of climate change and the applicable solutions, is no easy task. Climate communicator needs a simple message with good scientific basis, interesting images, and accurate data.
Patron of Climate Reality Indonesia and Senior Climate Change Advisor to the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs, Ambassador Dr. Nurmala Kartini Sjahrir, presented several plans from The Climate Reality Project Indonesia to support the film.
"In Indonesia, for the screening of An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power we work with the private sector, NGOs, and universities. In the next 6 months we are targeting 10,000 moviegoers in big cities across Indonesia," said Kartini.
Manager of The Climate Reality Project Indonesia, Amanda Katili Niode added "I hope through this series of screenings we can encourage people to address climate change based on their abilities."
Director General of Climate Change Control, at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Nur Masripatin, stated that Indonesia is committed to climate change control and one effective way is through community awareness activities.
