@america is the U.S. Embassy's American cultural center located in Jakarta, Indonesia. Its mission is to provide a space for young Indonesians to learn more about the United States and to share ideas about issues that both Americans and Indonesians care about.
The free event showcased initiative and actions in Indonesia and the United States and how youth has high ability to absorb information and to quickly adapt to new technology. It is expected that Indonesian and US youth will be able to network and become leaders in the mass movement to take actions on sustainable development.
Ranitya Nurlita, a youth environmental activist was the MC of the event, while resource persons included Jai L. Nair, First Secretary, Economic Section. Environment, Science, Technology and Health Unit at the US Embassy; Amanda Katili Niode, Manager of The Climate Reality Project Indonesia; Mirantha Kristanty, green architect and climate leader ; Matthew Boms, international manager of Climate Reality and Rachmat Witoelar, Former Minister of Environment, currently President’s Special Envoy for Climate Change.
Rachmat Witoelar on his remarks on Youth Actions to Reach Indonesia’s Sustainability Vision mentioned that unsustainable development patterns have destroyed and polluted our environment and is happening faster and wider than our efforts in law enforcement and governance could control them. Hence, the young generation today are faced with a fact that their future will depend on the scale and ambitions of actions taken today. It is therefore important to engage youth to assume a more central role in actions for environment and sustainability
The @america screened a short video clip on Youth Leadership Camp for Climate Change in three of Indonesia’s national parks, supported by UNESCO, UNITAR, Swiss Development Cooperation, Youth for Climate Change and Climate Reality Indonesia.
There was also a video screening of Former US Vice President Al Gore ‘s presentation at the global event in a segment of 24 Hours of Reality: Indonesia on The Road Forward.
